Charla Nash, then 56, famously had her face ripped off by an ape in 2009, when she tried to corral her boss' escaped chimpanzee. So, how could we call her story "miraculous"? What followed Nash's gruesome tale, which also saw her lose her hands, was the medical support she received after her fate hit newspapers across the world. Mid-way through 2011, Nash underwent a remarkable face transplant, a 20-hour operation that left her able to smell and eat solid food again. "I've had people tell me I'm beautiful and nobody ever told me I was beautiful before," she told the Today show last November.
