Kelly Ann Walz had entered her pet black bear's 4.6-square metre steel cage a "thousand times," a friend later said, but would do so for the last time one day early in the fall of 2009. While she cleaned the cage, first tossing a shovelful of food to the side to distract the beast, the bear turned and attacked the 37-year-old, mauling her in front of her own children. A neighbour shot and killed the bear while it was atop Walz, but the damage had been done. On the property that also housed lions, cougars and tigers, it was a pet black bear that killed the Pennsylvania mother.
